Last week, the community came together to celebrate BGANZ Botanic Gardens Week (19-25 May) with three free public events that highlighted local history, rare native species and sustainable garden design.

The week kicked off with a special afternoon event exploring the Bill Cane Collection, hosted by David and Jenny Cane. Attendees enjoyed a rare opportunity to hear personal stories and insights behind this remarkable local collection, followed by an informal discussion. The event offered a meaningful glimpse into the region’s history and culture through one of its most significant horticultural legacies - Bill Cane, passionate nurseryman, apiarist and Maffra local. Bill was famous for cultivating a range of native Australian plants, many of which are commonly found in gardens across the country.

Another highlight of the week was a presentation on Raising Rarity, a collaborative project aimed at conserving the native Billy-Button – a unique and threatened plant species. The session showcased how local schools, Council and expert partners had worked together to protect this important species, demonstrating the impact of community-led conservation efforts. Attendees learned about the project’s goals, its positive outcomes and how they could continue to support local biodiversity.

Rounding out the week, renowned landscape architect Andrea Proctor led an inspiring afternoon tour and talk exploring the Garden for Life and Climate Matched Garden concepts. The walk focused on sustainable garden design and practical planting strategies to help gardens thrive in changing climates while supporting biodiversity. It was a fitting end to a week of learning, inspiration, and connection with nature – and a hit with gardeners, designers, and nature lovers alike.
